A few hours before the exclusive Eagles preview in Utrecht, where the new DVD will be presented fo the first time in the Netherlands, Eagles bassist Timothy B. Schmit gives a few interviews in the Amstel Hotel in Amsterdam. Timothy seems to be in a very good mood upon arrival. He laughs, is interested, takes his time and obviously enjoys talking about Farewell I. He puts his black boots firmly on the ground, sweeps his long hair out of his face and starts talking.
Q: Tonight you will be present at the preview of Farewell I in Utrecht?
A: Yes, that's right. I'm doing that here, in Germany, London and Spain. I do promotional work one day and then I take two days off. I brought my wife and son with me, so we can have sort of a vacation at the same time. Yesterday evening my son and I attended a System of a Down concert.
Q: And? Did you like them?
A: That's not really the point. It's more like a learning process. My son and I acquaint each other with the music we like. I really like a lot of new music like The Hives, Keane, The Killers. I've seen Queen of the Stone Age, but I didn't really appreciate them. At this moment my son likes classical music, jazz, soul and Earth Wind & Fire. Also the Average White Band. You should listen to them sometime. You’ll probably like them.
Q: Did you know that the Hell Freezes Over DVD is used in a lot of audio stores in the Netherlands to demonstrate how well a surround system can sound?
A: I knew that from a number of other countries and the United States. It's one of the reasons that it was a bestseller. By the way, I heard that Farewell I tour came in number one in the DVD charts in the United States. Not much to complain about these days.
Q: Is the new DVD comparable with Hell Freezes Over?
A: Hell Freezes Over was overproduced. We did one or two takes and if it wasn't good enough we would do it again. It was recorded before a small audience in a studio. The new DVD is totally different. It was a live concert in a big concert hall from beginning to end. It was looser and maybe less overprduced.
Q: Were you involved in the technical proces of the production?
A: Just a little. Glenn Frey did most of it. He’s also on the roll as "executive producer."
Q: Why was this DVD recorded in Melbourne?
A: There was no special reason for that I think. We were touring there and it was more a matter of good timing. One advantage was that all the technical equipment was available there.
Q: I heard that on tour you take a big crew. This must have been gigantic when you started shooting.
A: Actually it wasn’t that bad. The director of the DVD is the director that's alway responsible for the shots (don't know the right word for this) on the onstage screens whil we're performing. Her name is Carol Dodds. She knows all the ins and outs of our music and she knows exactly what is going to happen. It's been a good move. Better than hiring a famous director who doesn't know your music that well. Also we used all cameras we normally use.
Q: I read on some forums that a lot of fans think you should stop touring and finish recording a new album. Is that going to happen?
A: I find that a very hard question to answer. We started recording some time ago and we've spent a lot of time in the studio. I think that we were distracted after that. We went in different directions. I honestly don't know if the work we've already done will be finished soon.
Q: The new DVD is called Farewell I Tour. How many parts can we expect?
A: That's a mystery for us and for everybody else. The band could stick together for another ten years.
Q: And when will you play in Europe again?
A: I can't say anything about that either. I know it's been discussed. At this moment we're very busy with the California tour, which is going to continue till the end of the year. After that we will take a long break. For me playing Europe is no more that a wish.
